Unique Engagement Ring: Russian Emerald

6 August 2006

iconicon Chrome Diopside looks like what we picture Emeralds to look like. Unfortunately, Emeralds are extremely expensive, heavily included, and very difficult to find. One of my new favorite gemstones is Chrome Diopside, also known as Russian Diopside, Russian Emerald, or Russian Diamond. It is mined in Siberia, which apparently is very cold and icy so it can only be mined a few months out of the year.  This means that there isn’t much in existance. Chrome diopside is one of the few gemstones that isn’t heat treated to enhance color. The only drawback is that it is only a 5.5-6.5 on the MOHS hardness scale, so there may be some tendency to scratch if you are rough on your rings. It’s just so sparkly though, great color, is unique and quite affordable. The ring pictured is 1.25 carats with diamond accents in 14kt white gold for only $150. Chrome Diospide is a great alternative for May babies who can’t find an emerald to suit them. Also makes a great right hand ring. Use the link below to get 15% off at Ice.com.
