The other, other side: How to be the perfect bridesmaid

6 April 2007

It’s that time of year when women are hunting for lavender dresses with dyed to match shoes so that they can be yelled at & otherwise abused, all for a token gift of fake pearls.  I speak of course, of the bridesmaid which is one of the most long suffering jobs known to mankind. After writing about what brides should expect from bridesmaids, I decided to write it from the other perspective.  If you say yes to this responsibility you should be prepared to:

1.  Make sure that you can fulfill the responsibility.  Being a bridesmaid takes up a lot of time, energy, & money.  When the bride asks you to be in her wedding party, be confident that you can meet her expectations in all of these areas.

2.  Be on time.  Yes, the bride can & probably will be late.  However, it’s your job to be punctual, just in case she is on time, you don’t want to hold things up.

3.  Make the day about the bride. Take deep breaths & try to avoid fights, even if the bride is being unreasonable.

4.  Don’t "steal the thunder". That’s the phrase from "Friends", meaning keep the attention on the bride.

5.  Keep things in perspective.  Your dress will probably be ugly.  There just isn’t a dress that looks good on an entire bridal party. Accept that.  The most important thing is being supportive & a good friend.

6.  Be prepared. A million things can go wrong on the big day, & the bridesmaid is the emergency wedding technician.  Make sure you have a sewing kit, & a sense of humor.

I honestly believe what goes around comes around, so it’s best to build up your wedding karma now.
