If I ran Target
7 June 2007I think that Target has missed its mark with its new wedding dress line that runs between $80 and $169.00. I think that they won’t be able to overcome the stereotype. This is the one day that brides want to feel like they are wearing something special not like they are wearing an $80.00 dress. If I were in charge of the line I would:
-
Concentrate more on bridesmaid dresses. These can be extremely expensive and more and more the brides are having to buy all of the dresses. If the brides can save money on bridesmaid dresses they will have a lot of extra money to spend on their own dress.
-
I would also create a line of fashionable mother of the bride dresses. These seem to be impossible to find and I think Isaac Mizrahi could do a very good job with this.
-
I would love to see a line of bridal accessories. Yes, there are currently two veils available as well as some gloves that would work for most any bride. There are also an unfortunate line of headbands which are supposed to be used in place of a veil. Instead, they make the bride look like a third grader. There isn’t one tiara in sight. I think if they can meet tiaras affordable it would be a huge hit.
So the big question is would I wear a Target wedding dress? I would probably at least try it on. Then I would have it custom fit to me and maybe some special embellishments like lace added or sleeves. All there is to lose is $160. Which isn’t anything in the wedding budget really. Check out more great posts at the carnival of shopping.

OH Sarkastic, I’m filling out the Target application for you right now. My sister is getting married in September, and we are in the throes of dress-stravaganza. I have better things to do with $310. Like go shoe shopping.

I definitely agree with you about wanting to feel special and not like they’re wearing an $80 dress. However, I’ve grown up in a small town and I’ve seen a lot of girls buy their dresses from the Thrifty Nickel or even rent their dress because they couldn’t afford a dress any other way. I know there are lots of places where you can get inexpensive wedding dresses, but unfortunately nowhere near here. But there is a Target, and I do think there definitely is a market for those dresses. If I had a choice between buying an $80 gown new and getting to keep it, or renting a $1000+ dress, I’d definitely go with the new one.
