Fire Opal
2 October 2007
Whenever a TV host describes opal they seem to say “This stone has real fire”. They go on to say “This gem just doesn’t show well on TV”. It’s true that opals don’t show well on TV. However, the first time I purchased the birthstone for October, I was expecting something spectacular. I expected that if I ever went camping & didn’t have flint & steel with me I’d be able to use the opal to start a fire.
Ok that was an exaggeration but I was expecting something spectacular. Instead, I got a milky gemstone that in certain light would twinkle if it was held just right. I haven’t really been a fan of opals ever since. If I was an October baby I would probably buy a Mexican Fire Opal. Technically, it’s still an opal. However, it’s an unusual color & a rare gemstone. Besides that, it has fire built right into the name.
