9 June 2008

Update:  This contest is now closed, thanks to all those who entered.  A new contest will start on Monday

“When you are kind to someone in trouble, you hope they’ll remember and be kind to someone else. And it’ll become like a wildfire.” -Whoopi Goldberg.

I started giving jewelry away at random because hopefully it will make people feel more visible & well less invisible. I think we all have so much power in us to change our lives & the lives of people around us, but we forget because of the little mundane parts of life. So every week I give away a piece of jewelry that the winner can either keep, or give away to someone else. To enter the contest just read the rules & leave a comment with a random act of kindness or who you would give this necklace to & why.

The prize this week is a 17″ liquid sterling silver necklace with black/purple freshwater pearls. Pearls are the birthstone for June.

The Rules:

One entry per person per week.

Please don’t sell the jewelry, it’s to make whoever receives it feel special. Winner will be chosen by a random number generator at 6pm on Friday Mountain Time.

Contestants should be over 18 & live in the lower 48 states because I’ll be paying shipping. I won’t sell or abuse your mailing address. If you’ve already won a Random Act of Bling, you can win again, but please give the jewelry away at random.

If you want to link or stumble this post it would be appreciated but is not required.

Comment/trackback/link should be about a random act of kindness or who you would give this jewelry to & why.

I have a friend who’s been going through some hard times, and I would love to give this to her. Thank you for offering such beautiful jewelry each week.

Ooh… those are tempting! I do love pearls! But I would really like to do a completely random act of kindness with these. I’m going to visit my sister in DC in a couple of weeks and would love to take these along and surprise someone in a store or a restaurant who is nicer than they need to be… how much fun that would be!

I am not poor, so maybe I don’t deserve to win. I have enough. The rest I tend to give away in the form of things people need to live their lives. The specific people I help are refugees, people who have lost everything except their lives. Our government offers them safe haven, but the rest has to come from within. You can read about this on my Website by scrolling down the right column.

Two friends and I started an empowerment program for refugee women. We do this in addition to our regular busy jobs, not as a job. We put in at least 20 hours per week each trying to make the project something that will benefit and teach the women for a long, long time.

A year–much less than a year–before we started this project, I was sick, I was suicidal. Very suicidal. I lost my faith but not my faith in hope. I wanted hope for myself but found my strength was in helping other people find hope. While I was getting my affairs in order and preparing for the end of my life, I discovered jewelry making. I loved it. It was the first thing I had loved in a very long time.

A few months after I started teaching myself to make jewelry, I had this opportunity to teach refugee women to make jewelry to better their lives. I gave away all of my beads to help the women get started (I have since bought more).

Now I can look back and see how close I was to ending my life. I can’t say I will never feel that way again, but for now I know that the time I have given back to myself has been used well and it has mattered. It’s important to me that my time matters.

Anyway, on the bad days, I turn to pretty, sparkly things to lighten my mood. The pearl necklace is beautiful and something that would brighten my day when it needs brightening.

Thanks for reading my story and considering me for your gift.

I am turning 52 on June 26th. I would say “Happy Birthday” to me that I made it this long. I really thought I wouldn’t see 40! Then again, I love to give gifts to others. I may decide that I would give it to someone on a whim. Thanks,Cindi

I would love to give this necklace to my cousin. She is dealing with her daughter’s health problems right now and I would like to cheer her up.

I would give this to my soon to be x-neighbor. I never got to know her, we met only once when her dog chased down and almost knocked over my daughter (my daughter was a little scared but unharmed). She is separating from her husband and they are selling the house. I know divorce is hard and she could use something nice.

Lovely thoughts. I would give this necklace to my new, dear friend. We just met over a year ago, had hit it off instantly, made lotsa girly plans and 3 months ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is going for her last chemo treatment next thursday and I would love to give her this then.
Seeing her go through this has given me a very real insight as to the tragedy of cancer. She has lost her once beautiful, has lost over 50 lbs and is almost constantly ill. But ya know what? She works at a childrens hospital and wehn she possibly can, she still volunteers.

That is a lovely necklace! Here is my random act of kindness: I have befriended a lady online who recently lost her husband. I don’t know her very well, but her niece and nephew are two of my favorite people and I’m trying to help bring some variety and cheer into their aunt’s online circle. I hope I can make a difference, even if it is a small one, as she heals from her loss.

Oh I love doing RAOKs! When I was working I would RAOK at least once a week. I would set aside a certain amount of my paycheck and throughout the week I would watch people, fellow employees, my boss, customers, people on the street. I had various ways of picking who would recieve that week’s RAOK. Sometimes it was just whoever needed help the most, or someone who just needed cheering up, other times I would just pick a person at random for no reason at all. I did my RAoKS secretly and noone ever found out who was behind them. Sometimes, I would pay a bill that would otherwise go unpaid, buy groceries and have them delivered, buy a gift to brighten someone’s day, whatever seemed to be the most needed at the time. I also did RAOKs that cost me nothing but my time and energy. Of course, most of those “free to me” RAOks were not anonymous as they included spending time with a lonely elderly person with noone to visit them, cleaning house for a day for a busy single mom, etc. Now that I can no longer work and have difficulty doing for myself, due to permanent disabling injuries from a bad car wreck, I can no longer to do the RAOKs like I used to and boy do I miss it. It would be so awesome to be able to RAOK someone again and this beautiful necklace would go a long way towards brightening someone’s day and let them feel special for awhile. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane and of course for the chance to win and really make someone’s day.

This week I bought strawberries for everybody at work. (I was going to buy donuts at first, but felt everyone needing to fit into their swimsuits would prefer berries ;-))
If my name gets drawn I would like this to go to Crystal B.
    Thanks!! :-)
