Christmas shopping 2008

I was really dreading Christmas shopping this year. My budget is tight & I have a lot of things going on in my personal life. I usually love it, but this year everyone on my list seemed especially difficult to shop for. I usually have to drive an hour & a half to go to the mall. Then, I am at the mall with all of the crowds. I have to brave this trek in the ice & snow two or three times just to get the shopping done.

Instead, this year I wandered into a new gift boutique in my town. It was like heaven. They had everything except for the kitchen sink & matching bar faucets. The prices were reasonable, the atmosphere was great & they had a larger book section than most stores. Plus, I get to support my hometown.

Two hours later, I emerged triumphant, with all the gifts, having spent 1/5 of what I usually do. I’m a little worried of what the recipients will think of their presents, it’s really different from what I usually give & spend. The upside is that everything is handcrafted so I won’t be giving the same presents as everyone else. At least it’s done.

To shop day after thanksgiving sales or not to shop

That was the question this year. I had to decide whether to go out shopping on the busiest day of the year. You know the day after thanksgiving. The day after I’ve spent all day shopping. So what could entice me to make my first venture out on such a day? 500 thread count sheets at Walmart for $20 even though I really need heated mattress pads instead. Yes, I considered the long lines & the fights that always break out & being awake before the sun.

I finally decided to just wake up early & see if I could get the sheets online. I was only there about 45 minutes after the sale went online, & pretty much everything was cleared out. Hopefully something of similar value will turn up online in the next few weeks, but I doubt it. It’s the one that got away. Did you go to out for the day after thanksgiving sale?

Tanzanite ring contest

Update:  This contest is now closed.  Amber was chosen by the random  number generator to win.  A new contest will start on Monday.

Every week I hold a contest to randomly give away a piece of jewelry to make someone feel special. The winner can either keep it or pass it on to someone else. This is especially important around the holidays because many of the “grown ups” are forgotten, or do without. To enter the contest just leave a comment with who you would give this to & why & a random act of kindness.

The prize this week is a size 7 genuine tanzanite band ring set in sterling silver. Tanzanite is one of the birthstones for December & it’s just plain pretty.

The Rules:

Please don’t sell the jewelry, it’s to make whoever receives it feel special. Winner will be chosen by a random number

generator at 6pm on Friday Mountain Time.

Contestants should be over 18 & live in the lower 48 states because I’ll be paying shipping. I won’t sell or abuse your

mailing address.

If you’ve already won a Random Act of Bling, you can win again, but please give the jewelry away at random.

Please leave a valid e-mail address, this is how I will contact you if you win. If I can’t reach you then I might have to relist

your prize. If you want to link or stumble this post it would be appreciated but is not required.

Comment/trackback/link should be about a random act of kindness or who you would give this jewelry to & why.
