I’m more than a little upset that June is almost over. This means that it will actually be out of the ordinary when I bring up alexandrite every single sentence.

I was expecting more of a selection, because it is June, I thought that alexandrite would be out in full force. The scary thing is that it probably was out in full force, there just was even less to choose than before. I recommend if you want to pick up on alexandrite to buy a loose gemstone & put it in the setting of your choice. The cool thing about this stone is that you don’t have to decide whether you want blue or red, you get both, & who doesn’t like that.

Moment of zen

I’ve had a crazy weekend. I need a moment of zen as "Jon Stewart" would say. I obviously need a moment of zen pretty badly seeing as I just put Jon Stewart in quotes for no apparent reason. I’m no too tired to go back & erase the quotes. Jewelry always seems to have a calming effect on me, obviously I need more of it.

I probably need an alexandrite piece from the Soho collection because I don’t have one yet, & that just isn’t right. I wish I was born in June so that I could justify buying another one. I love looking at my alexandrite ring & watching the colors change. It’s so soothing & definitely my moment of zen.

The people v. alexandrite

Yes, I’ve actually gotten in gemstone fights. I’m just that ~~much of a nerd~~ dedicated to what I do. I think that the perfect color change for an alexandrite is blue to red. Other people seem to say that’s it’s blue to green. I made arguments for both sides, & hopefully one day they will be able to duke it out in court. (Just a note, I figured out how to use the strikethrough I don’t have blog envy anymore. It was right in front of my face the whole time. I’m trying to refrain from just crossing out everything I write).

Blue to Red Color Change:

Lab created Alexandrite changes from Blue to Red. Lab Created is supposed to be the gems most perfect form.

Legend has it that alexandrite was indicative of the Russian Flag where it was discovered.

Blue to red does not look like Christmas.

Green to Red:

The saying goes "Emerald by day, ruby by night"

It was indeed indicative of Russia where it was discovered as the Russian national colors are Green & Red.

Everyone likes Christmas.

My final judgment is that I have an alexandrite, & it goes green to red. However, I wish that it did go from blue to red.

My Happy Thought for Today

I’ve had somewhat of a rough day. I’m so tired that I can’t even sleep. I need a happy thought. Alexandrite has always been that for me. To me, it is the metaphor for a perfect relationship.

It’s strong.
It’s unique.
It’s beautiful to look at.
Two minerals share equal face time. They don’t fight, they don’t try to outshine each other. They both bring their unique qualities.

I know, it’s just a gemstone, but it’s the coolest one out there.

The David Letterman of Gemology

I’m feeling like the David Letterman of gemology today, so I thought that I would post the top five reasons why you should switch your birthstone to alexandrite.

1. Alexandrite is many times more rare than a diamond. The supply of alexandrite is rapidly diminishing. This means that anything that you buy will probably go up in value. So you don’t just want this, you need this, it’s an investment. A very pretty, very sparkly, investment.
2. Drastic color change, from green to red.
3. Used in antique jewelry, even as engagement rings. Alexandrite immediately lends a classic air to any jewelry piece.
4. Named after the Russian Czar Alexander II, how many gemstones can say that?
5. 8.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale, so it’s quite durable.

So there you have it, if you aren’t born in June, start lying about your birthday so that you can have the coolest birthstone ever. I know that I sure will.

Thank goodness that May is finally over. I was trying to be a shopping trooper, but it was really difficult to find deals on emeralds, although I did come up with some pretty good ones. Now, it’s finally June, which is one of my favorite months because the birthstones are both pearls & alexandrite. If you’ve ever been to this website before, or talked to me before, then you know what a huge fan of alexandrite I am. I especially love the bands posted above because they would make awesome wedding bands, either in addition to a diamond engagement ring, or with an alexandrite engagement ring. I especially like how the stones go all the way around the band. Most people have never heard, or seen alexandrite, which is a shame because it is pretty much the coolest gemstone known to mankind. (It changes color, how neato is that?) Of course, it’s extremely rare & expensive, so I wanted to see just how many great alexandrite finds that I could happen upon this month because I’m Sara & I always do the impossible. If any June babies would like to trade birthdays, please let me know.

I’m using this Alexandrite ring to demonstrate why Alexandrite should be the birthstone for December. Look at that color change, beautiful green & red, in the same ring. Actually, Alexandrite should be the birthstone for every month. Like how Matt Damon should be in every movie. Ah, in a perfect world. For now I’ll just have to keep looking at that picture & thinking how nice it is that in my own little world, Alexandrite is every month’s birthstone.

Woozers, Whozzers, however it is spelled

I haven’t heard/said the expression Woozers since I watched “Inspector Gadget”. When I saw these earrings I let out a resounding “Woozers”, I have no idea where it came from, I was just that surprised. (Inspector Gadget would probably know how to spell woozers though) First off, I was thinking how alexandrite should be the birthstone for December. It is red & green at the same time how cool is that. Anyways, the Woozers came in from the fact that I’ve rarely seen alexandrite earrings. If I do find them the stones are miniscule accents because I imagine that trying to match a very rare stone’s color is rare enough, but also finding two stones with close to the same color change? Woozers, that’s all I have to say.
