Never trust anyone who tries to sell you a black sapphire. A black sapphire is really just a low quality blue sapphire. However, you can find low quality blue sapphires for not a lot of money & they look almost identical to a black diamond. Plus, sapphires are one of the hardest gemstones, so it will still be durable like a diamond. Just keep in mind that black diamond jewelry usually comes in smaller accent stones as pictured above, so keep the size of the stones believable. Also black diamonds are seen in more contemporary, trendy pieces. This is a great way to get a piece of jewelry that is on the edge of fashion, in a natural gemstone, without spending a lot of money.

Pink Diamonds
Pink Diamonds are next to impossible to find unless you are engaged to Ben Affleck, & he’s taken now, so there’s no hope for the rest of us. I know that these pictures aren’t an exact match, but that’s because I couldn’t even find a decent picture of a natural pink diamond. The more color the diamond has, the more expensive it tends to be. However, if it was a good pink diamond, it would look a lot like a Morganite, & would be a lot more affordable. There are several other gems you can consider if you want a natural gemstone that looks like a pink diamond such as Rubelite, Pink Sapphire, & Kunzite. However, Morganite has the softest pink color, so it’s the most believable. Just try to find a piece like this ring that is set in rose or pink gold because pink diamonds are often set in pink gold to make them look more pink. (Wow, if I had a quarter for every time I said pink, I would be a rich woman).

Blue Diamond Substitute
One of these gemstones is a .30 carat blue diamond for around $80, the other one is a 5 carat london blue topaz for $32.88. This is a great trick if you are an April Baby, or just can’t afford a five carat blue diamond, (& who can?). London Blue Topaz is very close to the color of blue diamonds. I like taking this route more than getting a CZ, because this still has value & is a natural gemstone. It isn’t trying to be anything else, it is what it is. However, if you would like to make the London blue topaz look more high end here are a few things to keep in mind.
- Keep the gemstone in a traditional cut, such as a round diamond. While some of the newer cuts are cool, this says "This stone is too precious to try anything crazy on it".
- Set it in a high end setting. If you want to use white diamonds as accents, make sure that they are clear, or use white topaz & lots of gold & silver.
- Simple is better. Let the stone speak for itself & don’t try to cover it up with an intricate setting.
Still don’t know which gemstone is which? I’ll never tell.
