I would love to have it for an engagement ring if Matt Damon ever asks me to marry him. Actually, it’s quite an inexpensive gemstone compared to diamonds, I’m just still waiting on Matt. Here are a few reasons why I love ceylon sapphires. (I shouldn’t have to elaborate on why I have a crush on Matt Damon).

1. Unusual shade of blue. To me, this color of blue goes with everything. I worry a little bit about having a sapphire engagement ring because I wear a lot of black & wouldn’t want the dark blue to clash. To me, blue topaz is great but a little too bright to wear everyday, so this shade of blue is perfect.

2. Sapphires are durable which make them a fantastic choice for everyday wear.

3. Traditional, but unique. That sounds like a contradiction, but sapphires have always been the obvious choice for a woman who wants a unique engagement ring. Princess Diana even had a sapphire engagement ring & if it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for this <del>wannabe</del> princess.

I’m trying to be a trooper & not eagerly await September. September’s birthday is sapphire. Oh that it were always September. That sounds like a good song lyric, any musicians out there, feel free to use it. OK, I’m going to focus. I’m going to stop thinking about September & I’m going to find some ways to wear peridot that are not ugly, even beautiful.

I think that peridot is a great option for trendy jewelry. It’s a fantastic way to try out a new gemstone cut or style without spending a lot of money. So next time that you see a celebrity wearing a new piece of jewelry, try & find it in peridot. This way you’ll still get a natural gemstone for about the price of a cz.

They are also an unusual shade of green, which August babies may or may not like. Even though it’s sometimes called “Poor Man’s Emerald” peridot doesn’t have that rich, grass green color. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that only comes in one color. The olive or greenish yellow color may not appeal to some people.

However, if you look hard enough you kind find a peridot that is a lighter green, it’s softer. It may not be the most prized form of peridot but if it’s something that you love, then that’s what you should buy. It’s your birthday & you can buy what you want to.

(Yes, I’m that sick. I watch jewelry shows for fun). The Generations 1912 line is one of my favorite, because they use the original molds from their family business. The jewelry has a very vintage feel. What I especially love about their line is how affordable it is, as well as the many rare gemstones they use.

So, I’m used to always just seeing amazing pieces on the Generations 1912 show, but I wasn’t prepared for this. They had paraiba tourmaline. What is quite possibly the rarest gemstone on the planet. Plus, it was only in the $600 range. They have several pieces in paraiba tourmaline, although the $600 is sold out. The jewelry is at great prices & this is definitely an investment piece. Did I mention that it’s the rarest gemstone ever? I had never even seen paraiba tourmaline, only heard about it. Shocking, absolutely shocking. I’m not one to ever use emoticons, but if I was there would be a whole line of smiley faces clapping their hands.

It’s a semi precious gemstone, meaning you can get a very large gemstone for not a lot of money & who doesn’t love that?

Peridot is very clear, unlike Emeralds.

Green matches most everything.

Unusual.

This month I’ll be posting about some peridots that will hopefully help out the reputation of the “ugly duckling of the gemstone family”. Actually, I just made that term up so it really shouldn’t be in quotes, but I really like peridot & hopefully you will too!

Most people think that emeralds are dark green and very sparkly and very clear. This is very rarely the case because the emeralds that are coming out of the earth now aren’t quality emeralds. However, when the untrained eye sees a bright green, cloudy, spotted emerald they just think ewww. They don’t understand that it may have cost thousands of dollars. An emerald is certainly worthy of such a price. However, it just won’t have the wow factor because it isn’t what people will be expecting.

Chrome Diopside is the deep green color that we associate with emeralds. It is clear, sparkly and looks very expensive. However, it isn’t quite as expensive as an emerald if you can find it. Chrome Diopside has the distinction of being one of the few untreated gemstones. Most gemstones, an estimated a 80-90 percent of gemstones, are heat treated in order to bring out the color. Chrome Diopside has the distinction of being one of the few untreated gemstones. Chrome Diopside is what we think that emeralds should look like, it definitely has the wow factor.

If you are a May baby you no longer have to lie about when you were born just because you can’t find your birthstone. That’s right, you can finally own a natural gemstone that looks the way that emeralds should look. It’s called chrome diopside. It hails from Russia and is also known as Russian Diamond or Russian Emerald. See technically it’s still an emerald it’s just a version of emerald that most of us would not be able to afford without marrying Nick LaChay. (Remember, that incredible emerald ring that he gave to Jessica Simpson for Christmas?) We all can’t marry Nick LaChay although some of us may try. Chrome Diopside is such a great alternative because:

It has a cool story behind it. Chrome Diopside grows mostly in Siberia so it can only be mined during the months that aren’t winter, which isn’t very often in Siberia. I have heard estimates that less than 100,000 carats come out of the ground every year. This to mean is that you’re still getting a gemstone that is a good investment.

This also means that you will have a gemstone that will be unique to you. It seems like emeralds are in such high demand that shoppers don’t have a wide selection to choose from. The mall may just have one or two genuine emerald rings in the entire place. This means that if you have friends and family who are also born in May chances are you’ll end up with the same green ring . However, most people will not have a Chrome Diopside ring. So if you can’t find an emerald you love, try a Russian emerald.
