Necktie purse

Written on 21 September 2008 by

The title of this post could also be “I wish I was braver.” I recently saw a tutorial on how to make a purse out of neckties. Then, I found an entire pile of neckties around the house. They are now sitting in the sewing room next to the huge pile of clothes that will never be mended. I love the way it looks & I have enough ties to make several purses, cell phone holders & maybe even a laptop carrier.

The only problem is that I’m scared. I can sew a straight line, which is pretty much all this project requires. I’m just terrified that I’ll mess up. I just know that one day I’ll be feeling really confident & someone will come up to me & say “Umm your necktie purse is breaking.” I haven’t been this worried about anything since the a/c compressor in my car went to heaven & I didn’t know how to fix it. It’s just fashion. I shouldn’t be so stressed out over it. Even more than that, it’s supposed to be a fun project. I guess I will try it & worst case scenario I can undo the ties & donate them to a thrift store.

The Rachel Zoe Project

Written on 21 September 2008 by

I was a little put off by The Rachel Zoe Project being called a docudrama. The show follows a celebrity stylist & her team. Comedy? Maybe. The term docudrama should be used for a show that follows a Chicago accident attorney, not a stylist. Well, that’s what I thought until I actually saw the show.

I thought that Rachel Zoe had the best job in the entire world. Who wouldn’t want to play with all of those clothes, shoes & jewelry. As it turns out the job is extremely stressful & complicated. Sometimes they don’t even have the right dress until the day of the event. That would freak me out of I was a celebrity & didn’t know what I was wearing to an awards show. It’s definitely something to consider as I watch the Emmys tonight. Who knew that getting dressed was so difficult?

Blue Topaz Earrings Winner

Update:  This contest is now closed but a new contest is going on now.

The winner of this week’s random act of bling was chosen by a random number generator as always. A new contest will start on Monday. The winner is Amy with her quote:

I just wanted to say that I have been a long time admirer of what you do, and I just wanted to say thank you for the countless women you have made feel special! I am a military girlfriend, so I hold the troops in a special place in my heart. I have recently started a group with my friends making and sending out care packages to deployed ships for sailors we know will otherwise be without airmailed love. Being away from friends and family is about the hardest thing a person can go through, but I like to think that a little bit of appreciation (and goodies!) will help make a smile or two.

What it takes to stay thin in Hollywood

Written on 17 September 2008 by

I sigh whenever I hear a Hollywood actress say that she in naturally thin. It always reminds me of an interview I read with Julianne Moore earlier this year. Julianne said that she is a naturally slender person, but she isn’t “Hollywood thin” She says that she diets all the time & is always hungry. She only eats cereal, yogurt & granola bars.

I’ve heard tales that Hollywood starlets used to have to appear perfect. Now, I think that it’s healthy that we see them as people. We see them go to alcohol rehab or go through divorces. I think that it’s progress when a celebrity admits that they need help & heads for a drug treatment center. Celebrities are so open about their lives but they all insist that they are naturally thin. Why can’t they just be honest? Then teenage girls who are sizes 6-8 wouldn’t feel the need to drop twenty pounds. I think people can be naturally thin, but I also think there is something wrong with an industry where eating is frowned upon.

I am going to cry…

Written on 16 September 2008 by

I am either going to start crying or screaming if I have to see Gwyneth Paltrow say that she can eat anything she wants one more time. For whatever reason, she feels the need to say this in every single interview. Granted, I love her as an actress & she’s beautiful. She has the most amazing skin on the planet. Every time I look at her I feel like I need Proactiv & tons of mineral makeup.

Part of my brain says that maybe the only thing that Gwyneth wants to eat are rice cakes. Maybe she really is the only human being alive who can eat whatever she wants without gaining weight. I guess I’ll watch the Oprah episode just to make sure she doesn’t know some secret that the rest of us aren’t aware of. Even if she really does eat everything in sight, does she really have to keep rubbing it in?
