Every week I run a contest where a random person gets pretty jewelry, kind of as a reward for all the nice things that they do that never get recognized. The winner can keep the jewelry or give it away to someone else. All you have to do to enter the contest is read the rules & then leave a comment about who you would give this to & why.

The prize this week are painted glass earrings set in sterling silver. I usually try to stick to genuine gemstones, but these just reminded me so much of summer & the beach I couldn’t resist.

Brian Williams from the Nightly News asked viewers to send in good news. I guess he’s gotten a lot of emails lately asking for a break from the really dreary news. It’s not about denying our country’s many problems, it’s more about giving people hope. One viewer requested that the newscast begin & end with good news. In response they will start airing a few segments about acts of kindness or “good people who are doing good things.”

I try to do the same thing every week by randomly giving away a piece of jewelry to make someone feel special. It’s a small thing that will hopefully make someone smile. This morning I wasn’t very nice to someone. I wasn’t mean, I wasn’t even thinking about them, I was just tired & didn’t feel like being awake yet. The person smiled at me & wasn’t effected by my general grumpiness. Within minutes my entire day had turned around & I was smiling & cracking jokes.

Since I’m not a morning person, I have to discover my own ways to pass on kindness. One of these is to give away jewelry at random. I can’t really remember what I got for Christmas last year, but I can remember what I gave. It’s so fun to see my nephews get excited about picking out the perfect presents for everyone. With thanksgiving coming up, it’s easy to be stressed out. I don’t even think we’ll be able to have cranberry sauce straight out of the can this year. I don’t even know how to make cranberry sauce if it doesn’t involve opening a can. It’s easy to get caught up in the little details & forget that it’s a day to be thankful.
