The “Head of Man” painting that was thought to be a Van Gogh worth 21.5 million is said to be a fake. The painting, which resides in an Australia gallery is thought to be by a contemporary of Van Gogh.
Looking at the painting, I just wanted to say “Well, duh, of course that isn’t Van Gogh”. First off, it’s thought to be a self portrait. Not only is it not Van Gogh’s painting style, there’s a very simple fact that the self portrait doesn’t even look like Van Gogh. Let that be a lesson to us all: If the self portrait doesn’t look like the painter, maybe you have the wrong artist.
I never really thought of doing pop art before. However, I saw some photos of Audrey Hepburn that inspired me. They made me realize that this was a much easier way to get started painting human figures because I didn’t have to worry about complicated shading.
I just used black acrylic paint, actually I had a layer of chocolate brown paint underneath for some more dimension. I was really excited how well they turned out. Granted, the last picture doesn’t look at all like Audrey, but I’m just glad that she looks human.

Most kids love to paint & create, most adults don’t. Most kids can really find beauty in whatever they have created. As an adult, we tend to be too critical, & think “I can’t draw, therefore I’m not an artist”.
I think that everyone should pick up a paint by numbers kits. These have really developed over the years. I have one that teaches how to paint like Van Gogh, & another one about Monet. Yes, people tend to scoff at these as not real art. However, you get to learn how to make brush strokes, how to mix colors, even how to paint inside the lines. Don’t let the fact that you can’t draw hold you back.
I love to look around at different paintings & try to interpret different styles. This really helps me see where I want to go as an artist. I feel like I’m a little kid wearing their father’s suit coat & talking about some day when I grow up.
I have such a long way to go, & sometimes, it’s hard to stay motivated. So I look around for inspiration. Fred Bell is one such painter & blogger. He posts pictures of the painting he is working on every day. I can’t even think of that many different paintings, let alone find the motivation to paint every day. It’s definitely something that I want to emulate when I finally grow up as an artist.
